The Challenge of Indian Summers
As temperatures soar across India, potted plants face extreme stress. The harsh afternoon sun can bake the soil, leaving your beloved balcony garden dehydrated. Here is how to maintain optimal moisture.
1. Water Early Morning or Late Evening
Never water your plants during the afternoon. The heat causes immediate evaporation, and water droplets on leaves can act as magnifying glasses, causing leaf burn. Water before 8 AM or after 6 PM.
2. The 'Finger Test'
In summer, don't rely on a fixed schedule. Poke your finger one inch into the soil. If it feels completely dry, it’s time to water. If it’s damp, wait another day.
3. Use Mulch
Adding a layer of dry leaves, coco peat, or wood chips on top of the soil helps retain moisture significantly by blocking direct sunlight from hitting the soil surface.
